CONGRESSWOMAN BOEBERT DENIES ALLEGATIONS IN SEPTEMBER 17 FILING
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-04) issued the following statement making clear there is zero truth to the allegations in a politically motivated September 17 filing to the House Ethics Committee. She rejected these baseless and utterly false claims in their entirety:
“I reject these baseless allegations as utterly false and there is no truth to them whatsoever. I have never had a sexual relationshipor an inappropriate romantic relationship with any member of my staff—past or present. This is nothing more than a politically motivated stunt designed to manipulate the ethics process, create headlines, smear me, and generate clickbait."
“They come from an activist who has long recycled sensational claims, including numerous baseless accusations previously fact-checked as false. These untruthful claims are ridiculous, reckless, and politically motivated as they come just a few weeks before ballots go out in my election. To be clear, swearing to it does not make it an official complaint. This was a political smear packaged as an ethics filing and published before anyone checked whether it even qualifies under the Committee’s rules.”
BACKGROUND
The press and other interested parties should not treat the September 17 filing as an investigation. Under House Committee on Ethics Rule 15, a submission from a non-Member is not considered a complaint unless a Member of the House certifies in writing that it was made in good faith and warrants the Committee’s review. No Member has provided that certification. The same rule bars complaints filed within 60 days of an election in which the Member is a candidate. The September 17 submission falls within 60 days of the November 3 election, and these false claims were submitted within that window. David Wheeler also likely committed perjury and broke a federal law when he certified under penalty of perjury that his lies were the truth and acknowledged that “knowingly making false statements to the Committee may violate federal law, including 18 U.S.C. § 1001.”
In a June 2022 fact-check, CNN identified at least five inaccurate claims previously published by American Muckrakers and David Wheeler, including the publication of a photograph of another woman as Boebert, an incorrect claim about a $70,500 contribution connected to Sen. Ted Cruz, a false abortion claim, and other inaccurate details concerning Boebert’s past. CNN also reported that the group had not provided corroborating evidence for its central allegations at the time including baseless claims that were 100% false including that she was a stripper, prostitute, and had two abortions. As noted in the June 2022 fact-check, “Wheeler acknowledged to CNN that the super PAC had been ‘sloppy’ and had published ‘inaccuracies’ on its anti-Boebert website.”
David Wheeler continues to make false claims that he “won” in court when he sued Congresswoman Boebert over statements she made in 2022 about potentially suing him and American Muckrakers for defamation.
The public record tells a different story. In June 2024, a federal magistrate judge recommended denying four of the six claims Wheeler and American Muckrakers sought to pursue, including their defamation and trade-libel claims, while recommending that he only had the right to fix two defective claims, which he chose not to do. Less than a month later, Wheeler and American Muckrakers moved to voluntarily dismiss the case with prejudice, and the court entered the dismissal. The court’s order provided that each side would bear its own attorneys’ fees and costs.
